1. Committee Business --

     Call to Order and Committee Business - Chair Hunsaker called the meeting to order at 9:10 a.m. He welcomed those present and had committee and staff members introduce themselves.

    Chair Hunsaker reviewed the meeting schedule for the 1997 interim period and indicated that the committee will be meeting monthly, excluding December and the site visit to the Uintah Basin scheduled for September.

     MOTION: Sen. Mayne moved to approve the minutes of the December 20, 1996 meeting. The motion passed unanimously.

2.    Review of Potential Study Items for the 1997 Interim Period - Chair Hunsaker said that in addition to prioritizing study items, there are six reports that are statutorily scheduled for the Business, Labor, and Economic Development Interim Committee this year as well as seven potential sunset reviews. The two reports that will possibly occupy one full committee meeting later this fall are the reports of the Blue Ribbon Workers' Compensation Commission and the

Electrical Deregulation and Customer Choice Task Force. He also pointed out that the committee can choose which sunset reviews, if any, it would like to conduct.
    
    A prioritization survey form highlighting 34 study items was distributed. Chair Hunsaker explained that before leaving, committee members were to mark up to ten issues they would like to see considered as priorities.

    Chair Hunsaker pointed out that there are several issues on the survey that are going to other committees for study. He also informed the committee that the Education of Insurance Professionals and the Mental Health Insurance Regulation issues have been withdrawn by the sponsors.

    Sen. Mayne reported on the hiring practices of the I-15 construction project. He indicated that the primary benefit of the project is that 70 to 80 percent of the workers will be Utahns, which will help fuel the state's economy. He also pointed out that the I-15 workers do not have to be union members.

3 Adjourn - Sen. Waddoups moved to adjourn the meeting at 11:15 a.m. The motion passed unanimously.
