Intermediate sanctions include a variety of correctional sanctions that lie between regular probation and jail or prison, such as intensive supervision, day reporting centers, electronic monitoring, or residential drug treatment.

            As described in Between Prison and Probation, "Intermediate sanctions are used primarily for non-violent offenders and require an offender to lead a more productive life in the community by finding work, doing community service, learning new skills, paying restitution, enrolling in treatment programs, or any combination of the above."
