2.    Sensitive Species
Once a species is listed as threatened or endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act, management options for the species and the land it inhabits are restricted. With some exceptions, the act strictly prohibits actions that may result in the taking of a threatened or endangered species or in the diminishing of its habitat. To provide greater flexibility in the management of species whose populations are dwindling, federal and state government agencies are seeking to protect those species before they become threatened or endangered. The Division of Wildlife Resources and federal land management agencies will inform the committee of their programs and policies to protect sensitive species. Industry representatives will report how they have been affected by requirements to protect sensitive species.
