UTAH STATE LEGISLATURE INTERN PROGRAM

The Utah State Legislature offers approximately 60 full-time internship positions each session. Students from Utah's universities apply through their respective political science departments each fall. Those selected to participate in the intern program are employed by the Office of Legislative Research and General Counsel and are assigned to one or more legislators during the 45-day general session.

Legislative interns experience responsibilities that vary in scope and demand. Legislators may require their interns to write speeches, interact with constituents, attend committee meetings, track legislation, interact with government agencies, compose correspondence, research public policy issues, and perform other legislative-related duties. Interns observe firsthand the process of lawmaking while providing much-needed assistance in helping the legislative session run smoothly and efficiently. Therefore, it is imperative that interns learn how to narrow their focus and how to use the Utah State Legislature Web site and other available online research resources.
