A new study released by Washington, D.C.-based Tech CEO Council found that Utah is the nation’s fastest-growing exporter of high tech hardware, software and services. The research results show the impact of free trade agreements on Utah's economy, in particular the high tech sector, which represents over 7 percent of the state's GDP. The study represents the first time that high tech, or information communications technology (ICT), goods and services have been broken out down to the Congressional district level.

The Art of Business Pitching Has Changed. Are You Onboard?

I’ve been doing this since the 1990s. Styles have changed, expectations have changed, but the fundamentals haven’t.

How To Better Answer the Question ‘What Do You Do?’

It happens to everyone in business. You meet someone new who asks you what you do. So, how do you create a WOW statement?

Equity Crowdfunding: Caveat Emptor? A Guide For Investors

Originally posted on | By Freddie Dawson

Changes to regulations in the UK have made it easier for investors to back new start-ups through crowd-funding platforms and potentially reap returns through equity shares.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) changed rules regarding who can buy shares of equity in a new start-up as part of its move to issue further guidance while opening up the investment market to more consumers and introduced rules on peer-to-peer lending crowd-funding platforms. Donation- or reward-based platforms (such as Kickstarter) remain unregulated as the FCA felt they fell outside its remit.

Sequoia's Investment Memo on YouTube

Originally posted on | Shared by

It is very hard to get genuine transparency on what VCs look for when making an investment. Some investors share their investment criteria, but rarely how they have assessed opportunities against those criteria.

The only public domain investment memo I have found is by Roelof Botha recommending that Sequoia make a seed investment in Youtube. Roelof has supported some of the most exceptional companies over the past decade including Youtube (I think one of his first), Instagram, Tumblr, Evernote, Square, MongoDB and others. It is a rare opportunity to see how such an accomplished investor thought about the opportunity behind closed doors and communicated his thoughts to the partnership.

Tech Company Leaders Share Moments that Defined their Careers

What do disruption, serendipity, championing and agility have in common? At first, it may not seem like much, but for four of Utah’s tech company leaders, these themes are what made their careers the successes they are today.

These tech leaders, including Carine Clark, president and CEO of Allegiance; David Bradford, executive chairman at HireVue; Heather Zynczak, CMO of Domo; and Sarah Lehman, CEO of Enve Composites, shared the themes that defined their careers during the Women Tech Council’s annual spring networking event Tuesday at Adobe in Lehi. Each spoke about specific moments that made them the leaders they are today through short, eight-minute TED-style keynote addresses.

Three Things to Focus On Before You Put Your Business Up For Sale

Different personalities go into business for themselves for a number of reasons.  Some business owners balk at the idea of working for someone else, while others are forced to go out on their own after job loss or other personal struggles.  While entrepreneurs are usually great at building businesses, they are often not as well versed in preparing a business to be acquired.  There are several things that a business owner can do to better position his or her company for an acquisition.

Industry Experience: Advantage or Hurdle?
