FORMER REPRESENTATIVE WYLLIS DORMAN-LIGH A former Representative, Wyllis Dorman-Ligh, passed away January 26, 1990. Please take a few minutes to remember and honor her contributions to our state and to her. Wyllis Dorman-Ligh was a native of New York. She was frequently asked "What brought you to Utah?" Unable to resist the truth, she told the questioners, "A truck." A friend who was returning to her home in Salt Lake City needed help in driving a rental truck from Maine to Utah. Wyllis had seen little of the West and the trip sounded like a lark and a splendid vacation. She came, she saw, and she stayed! Salt Lake City impressed Wyllis with its climate, scenery and relaxed style of living. But mostly, it seemed a place where government was reachable, where change was possible. Wyllis was born in Brooklyn on February 21, 1937. She received her Bachelor of Arts from City University of New York with majors in Political Science and Psychology and a minor in Business Administration. She did graduate studies in Psychology at the New School for Social Research, New York City; Fine Arts at Newart State, Union New Jersey; and Human Resources Management at the University of Utah. Wyllis followed many fields of endeavor. Pottery instructor, gas station manager, artist, writer, stage performer, flag person and legislator. She enjoyed jazz, modern classics, opera, ballet and theater. Living in Greenwich Village, Wyllis developed a concern for neighborhood housing and community development. Living in Salt Lake's Central City, she became involved in these same problems. A Democrat, she supported the ERA, and was a member of the Utah Equal Rights Coalition, Women's Political Caucus, Utah Housing Alliance, NAACP, National Association of Housing and redevelopment Organization, Central Neighborhood Council and Central City Food Co-op. Deciding to run for the House of Representatives, and winning, she was a loud voice for community development of all kinds. She served as a member of the Social Service Appropriations, labor and Manpower, and Business, Industrial Development and consumer Concerns Committees. Wyllis passed away in Salt Lake city on January 26, 1990. She will be remembered by her friends and loved ones as "one who cared." THIRD READING CALENDAR Sub.
