AN ACT RELATING TO PUBLIC EDUCATION; REQUIRING THE STATE BOARD OF

EDUCATION, THROUGH THE STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION,
10
TO SURVEY AND INVENTORY THE PROGRAMS AND PRACTICES BEING USED BY
11
SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO DETER SCHOOL VIOLENCE AND MAKE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
12
SAFE; AND REQUIRING A REPORT, TO INCLUDE FINDINGS AND

RECOMMENDATIONS.

This act enacts uncodified material.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:

Section 1. School safety survey and inventory -- Report.

(1) The State Board of Education, through the state superintendent of public instruction,
18
shall:
19
(a) survey and inventory the programs and practices currently being used by the state's 40
20
school districts to deter school violence and make public schools safe;
21
(b) coordinate its survey and inventory activities with the Center for the School of the
22
Future at Utah State University and the Utah Substance Abuse and Anti-Violence Coordinating
23
Council to identify best practices in school safety and determine which practices could and should
24
be implemented at each school or in each school district throughout the state's public education
25
system to make public schools safer; and
26
(c) determine the costs and resources required to implement the programs and practices
27
identified under Subsection (1)(b) on a system-wide basis.

(2) The State Board of Education shall report its findings and recommendations to the
29
Public Education Interim Committee and the Strategic Planning for Public and Higher Education
30
Committee prior to November 30, 2000.
