AN ACT RELATING TO PUBLIC EDUCATION; INCREASING THE ANNUAL

COMPENSATION RECEIVED BY STATE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS FROM $3,000 TO

$8,000 AND FOR LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS FROM UP TO $3,000 TO UP TO
8
$8,000; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

This act affects sections of Utah Code Annotated 1953 as follows:

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:

Section 1.
Section
53A-1-202
is amended to read:

53A-1-202. Compensation for services -- Additional per diem -- Insurance --
16
Certified statements of expenses.

(1) Each member of the State Board of Education shall receive [$3,000] $8,000 per year,
18
payable monthly, as compensation for services, in addition to necessary travel expenses.
19
(2) Each member may receive additional per diem compensation as established by the
20
director of the Division of Finance for attendance at meetings or activities related to any business
21
of the board, not to exceed 12 per year.
22
(3) Board members may participate in any group insurance plan provided to employees
23
of the State Office of Education as part of their compensation on the same basis as required for
24
employee participation.

(4) The state superintendent shall certify statements of actual and necessary travel
26
expenses incurred by board members in attending board meetings or performing duties authorized
27
by the board.

53A-3-202
is amended to read:

53A-3-202. Compensation for services -- Additional per diem -- Insurance --

Approval of expenses.

(1) (a) Each member of a local school board, except the student member, shall receive an
32
amount not to exceed [$3,000] $8,000 per year, payable monthly, as compensation for services.

(b) Members shall also receive compensation for necessary expenses on the same basis
34
as members of the State Board of Education.
35
(c) The board shall determine the exact amount under this statutory guideline.

(2) Each member may receive, as approved by the board, additional per diem
37
compensation equal to that established for state board members under Section
53A-1-202
for
38
attendance at meetings and activities related to any business of the local school board, not to
39
exceed 12 per year.

(3) Board members may participate in any group insurance plan provided to employees
41
of the school district as part of their compensation on the same basis as required for employee
42
participation.

(4) Each member shall submit an itemized account of necessary travel expenses for board
44
approval.

Section 3. Effective date.

This act takes effect on July 1, 2000.
